We thought we would get the AirPods 2 when Apple announced a new version of the real wireless buttons … but it appears that we only have the new AirPods (2019), an updated version of the originals.
While the AirPods (2019) perform some cool new features, such as the ability to charge wirelessly, they are not the AirPods 2 we were hoping for.
The good news is that the next generation of Apple AirPods can be around the corner. We've heard rumors about water-resistant, noise-canceling earplugs at this point for almost a year, and now analysts say they will arrive by the end of the year or by 2020 at the latest.
The latest report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says we were able to get two more headphones at the time – another updated version of the basic Apple AirPods model and the fully functional AirPods we've heard so many times over the past year . Here & apos; s what we know so far.
Apple AirPods 2: cut through
- What are they The highly anticipated AirPods 2 (not to be confused with the recently updated AirPods (2019) true wireless earbuds.)
- When will they be gone? Our best estimate is early 2020, but nobody knows for sure.
- How much are they? We expect them to be similar to the AirPods (2019), which start at $ 159 (£ 159 / AU $ 249).
Apple AirPods 2: release date
Now that Apple has released an updated 2019 version of the original AirPods, we do not expect the AirPods 2 to be released soon.
In 2018, tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that an improved pair of real wireless buttons with support for wireless charging would arrive in 2019, followed by a major upgrade in 2020 with a completely new design.
So, could this be the AirPods 2 we've been waiting for? So far, Kuo's predictions have been fairly accurate, up to and including the AirPods 2019 connectivity upgrade, so we're betting on an early 2020 release for the AirPods 2.
We originally expected the upgraded 2019 AirPods to be significantly different from their predecessors thanks to trademarks and Bluetooth SIG archives, but we now know that this is not the case.
That does not mean that we will ever see these functions. It would not surprise us if Apple saved features such as biometric sensors, new color schemes & water resistance for the AirPods 2.
Before we discuss the features that we expect from the AirPods 2 in 2020, let's look at what & apos; s is new with the current AirPods:
AirPods 2 price and availability
Our best estimate is that the AirPods 2 will be priced the same as the current AirPods, which cost $ 159 / £ 159 / AU $ 249 / AED679 with the standard charging case, and $ 199 / £ 199 / AU $ 319 / AED829 with the new wireless charging enclosure bundled in.
It is possible that the AirPods 2 will be more expensive than their predecessors, but we will be very surprised if they exceed $ 200.
The final price will probably amount to the features that the new AirPods 2 sport offers. Before we discuss the features that we expect from the AirPods 2 in 2020, let's look at what & apos; s is new with the current AirPods:

What's new with the AirPods (2019)?
Apple hasn't changed much in terms of design in the latest AirPods update – instead, the improvements to the next gene seem to be largely under the hood.
In the tops is a newly designed H1 chip that Apple has built specifically for the headphones. It improves the pairing times for connectivity, the battery life efficiency and provides hands-free "Hey Siri" functionality.
New for the AirPods 2019 is the wireless charging case for the earbuds, which means that you can use Qi-compatible charging mats to power the case without having to plug a cable.
In terms of sound quality, the 2019 upgraded AirPods do not differ from the ones you could get in 2016.
Apple AirPods 2: rumors
Previously registered trademarks suggest that the second generation AirPods would be a health and fitness device, in addition to a pair of real wireless earbuds. Now we know that the updated AirPods do not have these functions, we think we will see them in the AirPods 2 in 2020.
Back in July 2018 Apple filed a patent for biometric sensors that would allow the AirPods 2 to adopt fitness tracking capabilities such as those in the Jabra Elite Wireless. This followed another patent filed in March, which further fueled the rumors.
We also heard separately that the AirPods 2 would come in black and white, both waterproof and provide active noise reduction. Another patent from July suggested that Apple was working on a pretty handy tech for how the earbuds deal with outside noise and also relieve pressure from the inside of the ear canal.
The patent outlined a valve system that allowed sound to escape from your ear canal to prevent that strange echo effect that occurs when you talk to earplugs in your ears.
It then describes how the earbuds deal with ambient noise, using a microphone to filter out noise from the outside world, so that you can remain aware of your surroundings while still hearing your music.
One rumor that was right, though, was wireless charging and Bluetooth 5.0 – but instead of being improved thanks to an updated W2 chip, Apple has designed a brand new H1 chip, specially made for headphones.
Apple AirPods 2: what we want to see
Only a few years ago, companies struggled to make real wireless earbuds work, but now the goalposts have already shifted to packaging more and more functionality in their shells.
The Sony WF-1000X has succeeded in incorporating noise reduction technology into their small enclosures, and we hoped that similar functionality would reach the second generation of AirPods.
Apple's fine environmental sound technology outlined above suggested that the company would think this way, and since it didn't make the transition to the 2019 upgrade, we expected noise reduction in the AirPods 2.
More physical checks
Apple is not such a ' n fan of buttons, but in some cases you save a lot of time and effort, and headphones are an example of this.
On-board operation has become an almost essential part of the headphones in recent years, allowing us to control music playback and volume without the hassle of taking our phones out of our pocket.
With the AirPods of 2016 you could now control music in a certain sense, but they relied entirely on Siri, Apple's voice assistant.
New to the 2019 upgraded AirPods is the ability to tap the right earbud twice to start your music when it is paused or to go to the next track if you are currently playing a song … and that is the.
We would like to see the AirPods 2 take this further, so that you can jump back and forth more easily. What would be really great would be to use those long handles and add some swipe volume controls.
Interchangeable ear tips
Apple likes to rely entirely on slim white plastic, but we are not a fan of the lack of rubber tips on the AirPods, especially if there is no cable to catch them when they fall.
We want every genuine wireless earbud to feel comfortable and comfortable in the ears and include a number of interchangeable earbuds so that we can choose the ones that fit our ears perfectly. This would be the ideal way to achieve this.
One person in the TechRadar office even went so far as to attach a pair of rubber tips from alternative headphones to their AirPods to make them feel safer.
We did not expect Apple to change the fairly rigid design aesthetic with the 2019 update, but here & apos; s hoping it will be for the AirPods 2.
Better Android link
Since Apple likes to make sure that all its products are designed to work as a family, this has little chance of happening, but we would like the AirPods to play a little more nicely with Android phones.
Pairing is a dream on iPhones. You simply keep the AirPods close to your phone and they connect more or less automatically.
With Android, however, the process is much more complicated and it goes to settings menu ' s to select the AirPods manually. We would like Apple to simplify this process for the AirPods 2, although we are not catching our breath.
Different designs and colors
We get it, Apple likes white things. But in an era where iPhones and iPads are available in a range of different colors, we would like to see this courtesy extended to the AirPods.
We just want our headphones to match our phone and our Apple Watch; is that so much to ask?
Although Apple has experimented with different colors for the different devices, the earbuds have always remained the same iconic white. However, the AirPods 2 would be in black.
