    Elevatorless lift technology to offer new architectural and design possibilities


    The heights of future buildings are about to grow higher because more people are expected to live in cities due to the lack of space and urbanization.

    The current high-rise has an average height of 300 meters, but the Burj Khalifa in Dubai has a height of 828 meters, while the Kingdom Tower of Saudi Arabia will have a height of 1,001 meters when completed in 2020.

    “The higher the building gets in the future, the more technology is needed. The actual technology that can be used to reach the elevator with ropes has reached the maximum and new technology is needed to reach further heights, ”said Prof. Michael Cesarz Miguel, CEO of Multi-lift system at ThyssenKrupp Elevator, to TechRadar Middle East.

    Vertical and horizontal movements

    Multi uses the linear engine technology developed for the Transrapid train or the Japanese maglev train and allows multiple cars on one axis, both vertically and horizontally.

    In addition, Miguel said that the cordless lift technology has the potential and much needed solution for overhead bridges.

    Economically and technically, he said the ropes can go up to 300 meters to 500 meters with stress, which means that the efficiency of a traditional lift suffers.

    With Multi he said it could go up to 5,000 meters, but “we have regulations because nobody thought of buildings with those heights a few years ago. In our portfolio this can go up to 1600 meters. "

    Less sensitive to earthquakes

    The tallest buildings in the world have to support increasingly heavy cables needed to lift lift cars, but the swinging of buildings due to heavy wind puts a lot of stress on conventional cabins and the lifts cannot be used for safety reasons.

    Because Multi is not electrified, Miguel said that linear motors are driven by electromagnetic coils embedded in the back wall of the shaft.

    Because multiple cars can share the same shaft space, he said the amount of property lost in elevator infrastructure is less than the conventional system and less susceptible to earthquakes.

    “It is not a mass product and more expensive than a conventional lift, but requires fewer shafts. So the project developer can rent out more space, & he said.

    In addition, he said that the initial investment for installing a Multi will be higher, but the costs can be offset by the reduction in the number of lift shafts.

    Working on 20 projects worldwide

    The company is working with OVG Real Estate's new East Side Tower in Berlin to install Multi and expects to be operational by 2025.

    Miguel, who is an architect himself, has worked on both the technological and architectural aspects of buildings in various asset classes, including Dubai & Majid Al Futtaim's Dubai shopping mall, said wireless technology offers new architectural and design options.
