March Madness: what is it and how does it work?

We cannot imagine that you have landed on this page if you do not yet know the answer to these questions. But just in case …

Over the course of three weeks, US university basketball teams will play a total of 67 games to decide which team will be crowned champions. The tradition dates all the way back to 1939 when only eight teams participated in the competition.

March Madness starts with Selection Sunday, where 32 teams get automatic access as a result of winning their respective conferences and the remaining teams are chosen by a selection committee. In addition to learning which teams will play in the tournament, Sunday is also the first day on which the bracket is officially released to the public. The eight teams are divided into four regions ' s and are then sown from one to sixteen, with the highest team from each region earning the best seed.

The NCAA tournament then enters the first round where number one seed will see the number 16 team and the rest of the teams will be matched accordingly with low seed teams facing high seed teams. During the second week, the remaining teams move on to the Sweet Sixteen and then to the Elite Eight. The winners of each region will go to the Final Four during the third and final week of the tournament, where they compete for a place in the national championship to see who will be the winner this year.
