Just when we thought Apple had forgotten Mac mini, the company wiped us off the ground with a wonderful return to form at the end of last year, in addition to the new MacBook Air. In fact, the new Mac mini was so impressive that we are already anticipating a Mac mini 2019 full of excitement.
Even with the basic configuration, the Mac mini 2018 delivers high performance, as it features desktop class 8th generation Intel Coffee Lake processors to keep up with intensive workloads. The miniature Mac also has a lot of ports for connectivity, as well as a solid thermalk architecture to keep the temperature under control.
Of course the new Mac mini is far from a perfect piece of hardware. The integrated graphic display leaves a lot to be desired while the SSD storage is the absolute minimum. That's not to mention the price tag, which isn't that affordable – even if it's the cheapest Mac out there.
In case Apple decides to release a new Mac mini this year – hopefully in June 3 WWDC 2019, we made a wish list. Come back later for more updates as more Mac Mini 2019 release dates and pricing information begin to leak, or not at all.
Cut to the chase
- What is it? The next Mac Mini computer
- When will it be out? October 2019, or not at all
- What will it cost? Possible from around $ 799 (£ 799, AU $ 1,249)
Edition date Mac Mini 2019
Apple needed four years to release the 2018 update, so it's hard to know if it will release a Mac mini in 2019. In fact, maybe we should wait until a new MacBook Air or Mac pro to refresh. Still, if a new Mac mini is released this year, it will probably not happen until October, when it usually reveals new Mac releases.
That's how it ended at least last year, when the company broke the news of the Mac Mini 2018 at the Apple Event at the end of October, with the mini desktop on the shelves a few days later in November. Although we are still hoping for a disclosure of 3 June on WWDC 2019 with the macOS 10.15, although it is very unlikely that there were no rumors that suggested an update.
Again, whether Apple will release a 2019 Mac Mini model is pure speculation at this point, but we will update this story as soon as we hear something more concrete. Keep your eyes open.
Mac Mini 2019 price
Currently, the Mac Mini 2018 has two configurations: the $ 799 basic configuration, which has a Core i3 processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, a UHD Graphics 630 integrated graphics card and a 128GB SSD; and the $ 1099 high-end configuration, which has a Core i5 processor, a 256 GB SSD and the same integrated graphics and RAM.
With these two configurations, the Mac Mini 2018 has been named the "cheapest" Mac on the market and we definitely want to see the same prices in the 2019 update. Unless Apple has some big, expensive feature, it is planning to add – for example, the MacBook Pro and its rickety Touch Bar – we expect prices to remain in the same range.
Although, if Apple upgraded the storage, something that might not be completely necessary, given that most creatives (the target users) still have their own heavy-duty external drives, the price can go up a little.
What we want to see
Again, while the Mac Mini 2018 was largely well received due to its superior performance packed in a compact form factor, it still leaves something to be desired. If the small computer from Apple gets its update this year, there are a number of things that we would like to see improved, plus some new things that we would like to add.
A cheaper basic model
When the Mac Mini first came out, it was priced at $ 499 and would have to compete with PCs as an affordable access to the Apple ecosystem. Although the Mac Mini is five times faster than its predecessor and is still the cheapest Mac, it is still more expensive for $ 799 than comparable PC desktops.
And that is without the monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse that you might have to pay for, which means you have basically the same price as one iMac ($ 1,099) with more storage space to start.
The Mac Mini 2018 boasts impressive performance, but the price level is not nearly competitive. We would like to see the same level of performance and a very affordable price in the 2019 iteration if the computer gets an update this year.
More storage space
While the Mac Mini's target market is creatives, most of whom may already have one or two external hard drives to keep up with their storage needs, paying $ 799 for a basic configuration with only 128 GB of SSD storage still feels pretty steep to.
Nowadays that is the absolute minimum for desktops and hardly enough for storing a handful of apps and software, let alone large files, such as images and videos. At least 256 GB of space to boot is essential for a 2019 model.
Better integrated graphics
One of the main complaints about the Mac Mini is the fact that the integrated graphics card is underwhelming in almost every graphics-intensive application, whether you're streaming and making video & gaming. Decreased frames, low frame rates and slow video playback are some of the reported problems. Given the fact that many Mac users process and work with heavy graphics, that is not a good sign.
Some people have resorted to adding an external GPU to their setups, but that only adds to the costs and beats the minimalist purpose of the computer. So we would like Apple to step up the game and improve the integrated Intel graphics card from Intel Intel Iris or even a separate GPU inside. Perhaps something similar to what the MacBook Pro ' s have, which are considerably better.
Separate the food
Although the Mac Mini has an improved thermal architecture, some units have thermal throttling and overheating, sometimes a peak at more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit, according to end users. In fact it has become such a problem that some have resorted to replacing the thermal grease with third-party items just to keep the heat down, but not so much.
Separating the built-in power supply can be an effective way to manage this heat issue, giving the Mac Mini an even better performance and possibly a smaller form factor (or enough space for a special graphics card).
More user upgrades
The first Mac Mini models were known for their expandability, but this last generation has very limited options for user upgrade. In the past you could update the CPU, RAM and storage to your heart's content; now, however, only the RAM is expandable; and it's hardly an easy undertaking.
The CPU, RAM and storage in the Mac Mini 2018 can be upgraded while ordering, with a maximum of $ 3,999. But because Apple does it for you, it can quickly become expensive. We would like Apple to bring back the old generation user upgradability in the Mac Mini 2019, especially if the computer largely meets the same specifications when purchased.
This is more of a side issue, but the speaker of the Mac Mini 2018 is considered bad by some critics' Standard.
There is a headphone jack so you can connect better speakers, but it would be a welcome upgrade to give the 2019 model a better speaker – or remove it completely for an even smaller form factor.
