In this video, Chris Turner discusses the Sony 35 mm 1.8 FE lens.

Sony 35 mm 1.8 FE

This is what Chris thinks of the lens:

Build quality

  • Although the build quality is pretty good, it feels a step behind the 55 mm 1.8 Zeiss lens. It is about the same as the 85 mm 1.8. It doesn't feel high end.
  • Has the function button on the lens that you can use to keep sharp or focus. You can program it on a lot of different things.
  • It also has the AF / MF switch to easily switch from automatic to manual focusing.
  • It is small – slightly smaller than the 55 mm 1.8 – with approximately the same thickness. It is compact for travel units.
  • The focus is fast and works flawlessly. It also works well in low light and backlight situations. The video focus is also fast and accurate.
  • The lens is not weatherproof.

Image quality

  • The Sony 35 mm 1.8 produces high quality images. While the 55 mm 1.8 has a very strange flaring in some situations, the flaring in the 35 mm is well arranged with a nice glow. If you illuminate an image with background lighting, it will look very nice with this lens.
  • Chromatic aberration is certainly present. It's not great in terms of controlling aberration. It's pretty bad at f / 1.8
  • The lens is incredibly sharp. It is easily sharper than the 35 mm 1.4 zeiss, especially wide open. If you stop it, it will only get better and better. If you place something in the edge of the frame, it is still pretty sharp.
  • The colors are very beautiful and have a lot of contrast.

In general, the 35 mm 1.8 is an impressive lens.

Chris says that while the 35 mm is a great lens, it won't replace his favorite lens, the 24 mm G-master.
