    Yes, it is possible:

Sony may announce an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera, possibly called the a5, for a price under $ 1000 USD.

This information comes from Sony Alpha Rumors, which labels the rumor as “wild” and notes that it comes from an indirect channel. However, Sony Alpha Rumors also acknowledges some evidence:

First, Sony recently registered a few cameras, one of which is “a high-end camera” and the other “a more consumer-oriented camera.” Both will be launched in the coming months; a more recent rumor suggests the high-end model will debut in late July, with the consumer-focused model being released in August / September.

We already know that the high-end body is the Sony a7S II successor, probably called the Sony a7S III, and is positioned as a professional video / still hybrid.

The Sony a5 may be announced

But what about the other camera?

If this rumor is correct, it would be the A5. A reliable report suggests that Sony will release a “new kind of full-frame camera”, and a full-frame entry-level model would certainly fit in there.

A full-frame camera under $ 1000 is certainly an option. Canon’s EOS RP is currently available for around $ 900 USD and the EOS 6D Mark II costs $ 1200. But so far, Sony has focused primarily on three different camera setups:

The full-frame a7X series, including the a7S II, a7R IV and a7 III models.

    The APS-C a6X00 series, including the a6400, a6100 and a6600 models.

And the full-frame a9 series, which consists of the a9 and a9 II.

This means an a5 one a lot of potential for Sony, assuming the company can position it well. With an a5, Sony a6X00 users can upgrade for a long time for improved image quality and bridge the a6X00s and a7Xs. And many Nikon and Canon photographers looking to hop on the Sony train could be tempted by such an affordable full-frame option, giving Sony the chance to showcase its high-end products to more customers.

This is all speculation, of course, but I can’t help but be excited about the prospect of a Sony a5!

And you? What do you think of the possibility of an A5? Are you interested in a camera? And what do you think it would offer? Share your thoughts in the comments!
